Floor vs Ceiling Explained: The Skill That Wins Close Weeks
The best fantasy managers do not just ask “who scores more?” They ask “who scores more given my situation this week?” That question comes down to floor and ceiling.
Floor: your safety net
A player’s floor is their realistic bad-day outcome. High-floor players rarely bust. When you are the favorite and just need to not blow it, floor is your friend.
Ceiling: your comeback button
A player’s ceiling is their upside. When you are projected to lose, a safe 10-point player cannot save you — you need someone whose ceiling can swing the whole matchup.
Reading the range
We calculate floor from the 20th percentile and ceiling from the 85th percentile of a player’s real game logs — no guesswork. You can compare any two players side by side on the compare tool or scan the full range on the projections page.
Favored? Start the floor. Desperate? Chase the ceiling.
And if your ceiling play gets hurt in the first quarter, you are not stuck — that is exactly what live substitutions were built for.
